About Adriana Zekveld

My research focuses on the effect of hearing loss on speech perception difficulties and listening effort. My recent studies assessed the quantification of listening effort using pupillometry, and the relationship between listening effort and hearing related stress.

My current projects aim to assess listening-related effort in conditions that are more ecologically valid than standard speech perception tests. For example, social aspects are taken into account, or ambulatory recordings of hearing-related stress are performed in actual daily-life situations.

I collaborate with academic and industrial partners (hearing aid manufacturers).

About my department

Through cross-disciplinary collaboration, we advance our understanding of the determinants and consequences of ear and hearing problems (epidemiology). Our research places a particular focus on listening effort and its effect on daily life stress. We develop specific speech recognition tests and patient-reported outcome measures that take an individual’s unique cognitive capacities and daily physical and social environmental factors into account (diagnosis). Additionally, we create and evaluate interventions aimed at treating (cure) or optimally supporting (rehabilitation and care) individuals with ear or hearing problems. We strive to develop 21st century solutions to ear and hearing problems by exploring innovative techniques such as Artificial Intelligence and e-health applications used to provide digital care.

Our research activities are embedded within the Amsterdam Public Health (APH) research institute. www.earhearingamsterdam.nl
