About the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR)

The Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) is a centre of excellence for multidisciplinary research on drug discovery and development.

Despite major advances in medicine- research, many common diseases such as cancers, neurological or cardiovascular diseases, or auto-immune diseases, still lack effective treatment, or are still often found incurable.

That is why our work to develop new and more effective drugs is essential. At the LACDR we work at the leading edge of drug-design and fundamental research of new drugs, optimization of existing drugs, and personalised medicine.

Our research is focused in three divisions: Drug Discovery & Safety, BioTherapeutics and Systems Biomedicine & Pharmacology. You can find detailed information about the three divisions on our website.

LACDR QS Ranking in Pharmacology and Pharmacy (2019)

  • #17 Worldwide
  • #8 Europe
  • #1 The Netherlands

Available projects

We have places for students with CSC scholarships, including the following projects:

  • Development of a comprehensive physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model for drug absorption – inclusion of gut tissue distribution processes
  • Development of a 3-dimensional brain to predict spatial distribution of drugs in the brain
  • Development of a CNS distribution model for large molecules
  • Systematic in vivo approach on the influence of drug properties on drug distribution following intranasal drug delivery
  • Biomarker discovery in diagnosis of early stage Alzheimer’s disease: the isolation and characterization of CNS derived extracellular vesicles
  • Cell heterogeneity matters: design of a capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry approach for single cell metabolomics
  • Enantioselective profiling of amino acids for the screening of novel biomarkers in neurological disorders
  • Computational modeling of regulation of the T cell immune response
  • Novel receptor concepts to target G protein-coupled receptors
  • A live metabolic imaging platform to understand clinical kidney Ischemia Reperfusion Injury
  • Machine learning based de novo generation with rational polypharmacology

PhD Education and Supervision program

LACDR has developed the PhD education and Supervision program. The objective of this program is to educate PhD candidates in becoming professionals who are competent to conduct scientific research in the field of the pharmaceutical sciences independently.

The program constitutes the basis for guiding PhD candidates in their research ultimately leading to a successful defense of their PhD dissertation within the set period. As part of this program, PhD candidates will be advised by an individual “PhD Advisory Committee”. In addition, a program of courses is offered, providing a basis to acquire several personal and professional skills. You can find detailed information in the PhD portal on the LACDR website.

During the PhD Workshop China Dutch Virtual Event you can contact Prof. Dr. Irth via Skype (LACDR Leiden University).
