The Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science inspires researchers and students to find sustainable solutions for complex societal issues. From forest fires to big data, from obesity to medicines and from molecules to the moon: our teaching and research programs cover the full spectrum of the natural sciences. We share knowledge and experience with leading research institutes and industries, both here in the Netherlands and abroad.
Working at the Faculty of Science means working with students, PhD candidates and researchers, all with a clear focus on their field and a broad view of the world. We employ more than 1,250 staff members, and we are home to more than 11,000 students.

Faculty of Science Research Departments
Sustainability, climate change, biodiversity, digital and connected society, data science, medicines and vaccines, medical technology, food and water, living environment and health: the major challenges of our time require fundamental solutions from Science. A values-driven, experimental, computational and interdisciplinary approach is essential for this. This approach is in the DNA of the Faculty of Science of VU Amsterdam. And our scientists are working with heart and soul on solutions for these major challenges. In their own research, through valorisation, and by educating new generations of socially engaged global citizens. So that, with knowledge and an entrepreneurial attitude, they can make a valuable contribution to a sustainable, healthy future.
