Maastricht University

This is us

Maastricht University (UM) is the most international university in the Netherlands and, with nearly 22,000 students and 5,000 employees, is still growing. The university distinguishes itself with its innovative education model, international character and multidisciplinary approach to research and education. Thanks to its high-quality research and education, as well as a strong focus on social engagement, UM has quickly built a solid reputation. Today, it is considered one of the best young universities in the world.

The European university of the Netherlands

Located in the heart of Europe, UM can rightly call itself the European university of the Netherlands. More than half of our student population and almost half of our academic staff come from abroad. Together, they represent more than 100 different nationalities. Maastricht University is a European network university with a global outlook and a solid base in our Euregion. We are, and always have been, firm advocates of the internationalisation of education and research, because we see the added value. Our unique focus prepares students for a career near or far. Only if we join forces in Europe, can we realise a sustainable and just society, abolish poverty and contribute to other Sustainable Development Goals.

Education: small scale and international

Maastricht University (UM) is known for its Problem-Based Learning system and international orientation. Our small-scale ‘international classroom’ brings together people from all over the world who have different backgrounds and perspectives. And it’s these very differences that make the UM learning experience unique. We distinguish ourselves with a challenging learning environment with small and interactive group sessions. Students get to know each other and broaden their social network by working together. They are also encouraged to actively participate in discussions in the educational groups. With better learning results as a result.

Cutting-edge research

Research at UM is interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary in nature. It is inspired by contemporary social issues and seeks to contribute to their solutions. To this end, researchers not only cooperate with colleagues from other disciplines and UM faculties, but also with Dutch and international institutions and businesses. Our research is also integrated with education at every level.

Maastricht's identity is determined by its history, location and the people who live and work here. Maastricht University's research reflects this and is centred on four themes: Quality of Life, Learning and Innovation, Europe in a Globalising World, and Sustainability and Circularity. Some of the issues that fall under these themes are healthy ageing, climate change, demographic changes, the impact of technological developments, ageing populations, healthy and affordable food, and the European integration process.
