How hot will the Earth’s climate be in a hundred years? Will temperatures rise steadily or can we expect sudden accelerations? NESSC brings scientists together with a background in physics, earth sciences, ecology and mathematics. To better understand the processes behind climate change and to improve future climate projections and predictions.
NESSC is a virtual research centre comprising experts from the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, Radboud University Nijmegen, Utrecht University, VU University Amsterdam and Wageningen University. Funding is provided by a Gravitation grant from the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, which supports excellent research. Learn in the video about the main goals of NESSC.
For the second phase of NESSC there will be a total of 31 PhD positions, of which at least 13 will be partly funded through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND program. All PhD positions will be fully funded according to Dutch CAO for four years. The PhD positions will be hosted at one of the NESSC research institutes: Utrecht University, Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, Radboud University Nijmegen, VU University Amsterdam or Wageningen University.

Through our first call we have successfully hired 18 PhD candidates, for our second call, we are looking to fill our final 13 positions. The recruitment is closed. Currently we are screening the applications. Applicants will be informed in the end of November.
NESSC offers young academics the opportunity to work on important scientific topics in not previously existing partnerships, and thus creates the conditions for innovative, groundbreaking and multidisciplinary research, including both experimental and theoretical approaches.
NESSC will host 31 excellent, talented, enthusiastic, highly motivated and goal-oriented Early Stage Researchers (ESRs), with a no-nonsense mentality. Through our first call we have successfully hired 18 PhD candidates, for our second call we are looking to fill our final 13 positions. The ideal candidates are interested in climate research, are highly motivated to perform research in an excellent, exciting and international working environment, and are committed to a 4 year PhD track. They are excited about moving to the Netherlands and to perform a secondment at one of the NESSC COFUND Partner Organisations in the Netherlands or globally.
